Hospital

Monday, March 13th, 2006

We’ve started my hospital attachment in Hospital Likas since last friday in the gynae department under Dr Soon. He is the head of department and also the state gynae in Sabah. Dr Soon is a very reasonable and systematic doctor whom i grow to respect as days pass by.

On friday we visited the Labour Ward, and i saw my 1st delivery! :o) It was wonderful to see a new life coming to earth! The gynae offered me a chair.. cos he himself told me that he fainted when he saw his first delivery! Wat an irony.. However, i survived!

Today, we were in the OT. We witnessed Dr soon removing a cyst growing from the left ovary using a laparoscope. It was so amazing that by using 3 sticks and 3 small holes on the body, so much can be done within the body! Next we saw a lady who has a large carcinoma in the cervix. The surgeon pulled open the vagina and the tumour was almost cover the whole opening! Poor lady..

Tmr’s wat they called the ‘caesarian (not sure about the spelling) day’! it’s a day for most of the caesarian cases!! hope it’ll be fun!

Diving

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

‘Once you take your first breath under water, your life will never be the same.’

I’ve gone to a totally different extreme from Gunung Tahan.. from 2187m above sea level.. to exploring 15m under the sea! It may seem trivial.. but 15m under the sea is equivalent to 2.5 atmospheric pressure!

I am a PADI certified diver! I hold a PADI open water diving certificate! which means.. I can dive in any part of the world with a buddy, provided it’s a sea. (Haha.. now steph cant laff at me.. i’m just one level behind u..)

We - Me, Aaron, Andrew and Zhi(Xi!)Yong - took our course under a wonderful instructor, named Mr Foong. Our first dive was in Pulau Sulug, just off the shore of Kota Kinabalu. We learned about our gear which were the Buoyancy Control Device (BCD), regulator, tank, mask, fins, snorkel and wetsuits. It only took us a blink of an eye before we assembled all of it together. Like a pro, we did a backroll off the boat. We did the following modules:

  1. Mask clearing
  2. Buoyancy control
  3. Regulator retrival
  4. Cramp removal
  5. Alternate air source breathing
  6. Mask removal

Too easy!

Note: For an average beginner, the maximum depth is usually 5m. However, for pros like us, we went down double of that! No problem.

The second day was more for revision. We snorkelled in the morning. That’s when I learned how to skin dive from Andrew and also how to tread water. It was an hour of pure fun for me! After that, we went to the shore to build sandcastles (wow!). We named the castle ‘Tomb of Crab’ cuz we stuck a dead crab inside it.

The third and final day was great cuz we were accompanied by a very experienced diver named Stephanie Wong! She looks cute in her black and pink wet suit and a super mini baby flippers! haha.. However, it pisses me off when she looks so comfortable in the water when i was struggling to get my bouyancy correct. I kept floating up and down.. :) <- steph

I was thankful that she turned up tat day cuz she finally could show us what she’s best at - being our camera woman! haha.. We bought an underwater camera and made her hold it the whole day! Thanks a lot! Steph said she wants payment guys! The pictures turned out wonderful. (ahem!)

We learned how to remove our BCDs and weight belts. We also did navigation and emergency ascent.

The glorious moment was when we cleared our mask for the last time. Mr Foong gave us 2 claps (2 exactly) and shook our hand. A golden moment I’ll never forget!

And now.. sitting here in a beautiful house, looking at a flat screen monitor, typing on a wireless keyboard, and accompanied by the most beautiful girl on earth, I’m presenting myself to everyone as DIVER GOH CHUN PENG!

Thank you very much and hope you’ll have a good day!

PS: LEARN DIVING! YOU WILL NEVER REGRET! :o)
